Photo Shoot: NAHA 2010 Salon Team of the Year finalist!

I am so excited to announce that the amazingly talented team at Jackson Ruiz has been selected as finalist for NAHA 2010 Salon Team of the Year! Thanks to Tania Quintanilla (photography), Brandy Joy Smith (wardrobe) and all our wonderful models for your dedication to excellence. Here are the pictures that got us there!!!!

Personal Blog: First Date Pictures

Yesterday afternoon I received three pictures from Tania (TQPhoto) in my inbox… Unfortunately, I was out on a job and had to wait three whole hours before I could get home to download them! I saw them on her Facebook fan page (thank you iPhone!) before I got home so I knew what they looked like and that made me want to get home to download then even more… sadly, I had to wait.

It got me thinking about why I love what I do; I love it so much that when a photographer sends me pictures from a great shoot, it makes me feel like I’m so in love and just can’t wait for my man to pick me up for our date so I can kiss him! I think that’s a pretty good way to feel about a job ;-)

Here are the pictures that got me so worked up:

Engagements: Christina & Mitch

Christina and Mitch chose a 70′s inspired theme for their engagement shoot and even rented a beautiful vintage Camaro! I fell in love with the pictures taken by their photographer, Clayton Austin, but I guess that should be no surprise because Christina is a talented wedding photographer herself! We met last November when Amy (see Amy’s bridals HERE) booked us both for her wedding, so I was trilled when Christina chose me to be the makeup artist for her own wedding!

Products I Love

- NARS Eyeshadow Duo in Rated R

This shadow duo is perfect if you’re looking to add some vivid colors to your makeup bag… It consist of two shades, a fluorescent green and a brilliant blue. Worn together or separately, either is sure to cause a stir!

- Makeup For Ever HD Microfinish Blush

This blush is like no other; it blends seamlessly and provides a soft, natural color that will still turn heads!

- Individual False Lashes

I have never been a fan of the “strip false lash”… I can always spot them a mile away, no mater how “natural” they claim to be. I use individual false eyelashes in the vast majority of my applications and I even use them on myself for those special occasions when I need to look my best!

Words of Advice: The Bridal Makeup Companion

Tips, pointers and advise to help all you brides out there prep for the big day!

6 months before your wedding day

- Give your skin some TLC Now is the time to find the perfect skin care regimen for you depending on your skin type. Always cleanse skin twice a day with a cleanser and toner fallowed by a light lotion and hight SPF sunscreen in the day and a hydrating cream at night. Starting a Good skin care regimen well before your preview session, engagements portraits, bridal portraits and wedding day is very important to how your makeup will look and last.

- Schedule a course of facials  If your skin is in good health, a series of facials every four to six weeks will help ensure your skin will be clear and radiant on your wedding day.

- See a dermatologist If you have any problems with your skin, now is the time to start talking to a doctor.

3 months before your wedding day

- Start looking for your makeup style This is the time to start planning out what your makeup will look like for your bridals and wedding day. Start by looking online or though magazines to find a look that suits you or talk with your makeup artist. Having an idea of what style of makeup feels right to you will ensure you feel beautifully stunning, but most of all, like yourself!

- Schedule your makeup trial session Now it’s time to put all those makeup styles you like to the test! Be sure to snap pictures in-between looks so you can think them over later.  A trial session weeks before your wedding will also help to ease your nerves on the big day. I highly recommend this services for all my brides. Your makeup style should never be a last minute decision.

1-2 weeks before any makeup application

- Schedule a Dermaplane session This exfoliation treatment results in a healthy glow as well as removing “peach fuzz.” We recommend scheduling one a week before your trial, engagements and bridals.

- See a brow specialist Now is the time to get those brows under control. Letting a pro help you will ensure they are shaped the best way for your face.

Photo Shoot: Austin Monthly, March 2010

MMC Makeup Artist Maggie Bosworth recently did makeup for the March issue of Austin Monthly…

here is what she had to say about her experience!

“When Maris contacted me about a job for Austin Monthly, I was ecstatic to be apart of a photo shoot for the March issue! The Trishas, a local band of four talented girls, were being featured in the style section as one of Austin’s top bands to see in 2010. I had a great time working with the the whole team of
professionals that day and I hope to get the opportunity again soon!”

Wedding: Amanda & Leon

When I arrived at the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Austin to do makeup for Amanda and her bridal party, I knew she would be a beautiful bride and wanted a softer, more romantic look for her wedding day than the smokey, dramatic look we chose for her engagement portraits back in October. I also knew that the always fun and talented photographer Eric Doggett would be there to capture ever detail, and one of my favorite weddings coordinators, Lorena Molina from Something to Celebrate, would be there to make sure everything when off without a hitch…

What I did not know (or expect for that matter), was that Amanda and Leon were planning to surprise everyone at the reception with a Thriller-inspired dance!

Congratulations Amanda and Leon, may you have a delightful and thrilling (hehe) life together!

Wedding: Jessica & Peter

MMC Assistant Makeup Artist Maggie Bosworth recently did makeup for Jessica’s wedding, here is what she had to say:

“Jessica has been a great friend of mine for a little over a year now so it was wonderful to be able to do makeup for her wedding! She was very casual about her wedding and being a very natural girl, she wanted to keep her makeup as simple as possible to go with the down to earth feeling of her wedding. The pictures you see below are by her amazing photographer Jessica Attie with I Do Photography. Congrats Jessica and Peter!”

Words of Advice: Choosing the right foundation

Choosing the right foundation can be tricky process, there are so many different types to choose from, how do you know which one is right for you?

1. Type: First decide what kind of foundation if best for you. There are three basic types of foundation, liquid, cream, or powder. Liquid is the most popular and is very good for most skin types, and usually gives a light to medium coverage. Cream is very versatile and depending on how much you apply it can give a light to heavy coverage. Powder tends to be good for sensitive skin because it doesn’t clog pores as much, but it will usually give a light coverage.

2. Shade: You’ve chosen the type of foundation you need, now it’s time to find the perfect shade. Always try at least three shades on your cheek, not your hand, and view in natural light, even if this means walking out of the mall with a small mirror! You must also identify weather you have yellow or pink undertones, one of the most common mistakes made in choosing a foundation. This is easily done by looking at different foundations on your skin; you want one that seems to disappear when applied. In my experience, most people have yellow undertones, but it’s much harder to find foundation shades with yellow tones.

Follow these easy steps and you’ll be on your way to the perfect foundation!

Project Color: GREEN, WHITE & RED

At the first of 2010, photographer Maria Bernal and I started off on an adventure; to document a multitude of different colors in a series of images aptly named PROJECT COLOR. In each set, the color of choice is reflected in the makeup and styling and has a distinctly different feel than any other. Over the next year, we will continue our adventure into the world of color. These are the colors we have covered this far…
